Models of Distribution for Locally-grown Produce

The Glens Falls Unitarian Universalist Church is holding a meeting/potluck to get local farmers and food lovers together to discuss how to encourage more people to buy locally grown foods. Cheryl Nechamen will moderate the panel which will include the presidents of the Saratoga Farmers' Market and the Glens Falls Markets. Two representatives of community supported agriculture farms will join us - from Our Farm CSA and the Alleged Farm CSA. Finally, two combination models will be presented. One, already functioning, combines a CSA with a cooperative of farmers, and buyer groups who purchase via the internet. The second, is a proposal coming from a Saratoga chef, which would combine a network of farmers with customers who would, again, buy over the internet. Distribution to be worked out.

We hope to reach out to community leaders who are interested in eating foods grown closer to home. How can the marketing mechanisims be improved to make this more easily possible? Since many local farmers are concerned with growing their crops sustainably, we who buy from them not only eat foods that are good for us, but that are also good for the Planet.

The meeting starts at 4:00 p.m. and will be followed by a potluck at 5:30. The church is located in Queensbury. From the south get off the northway at exit 19. Turn right, pass Aviation Mall, and turn left at the Glen Street intersection. Drive north on Glen Street, just past Walmart's and turn left on a tiny street - Weeks Road. The church is at the end of the road - turn right into the parking lot.
